The World Is Not On Fire

I read Dr. Garrett’s “World On Fire” column (Kingsport Times News, August 3rd) and felt that I was reading some ideologue’s paper rather than that of an objective observer.   The column was laced with such descriptions of climate realists as “paid shills”, “willfully blind”, and “climate change deniers”, all describing anyone who dares to disagree with him on climate.   He even stated that now is “the first time we have destroyed a world”, while primarily describing routine weather events.   The last time I checked, summer was supposed to be hot and winter was cold. Such heavy-handed raving … Continue reading The World Is Not On Fire

A Global Warming Fairy Tale

Once upon a time it was called global warming, and the people were led to fear extreme heat. Then it turned cold at times, and the big bad climate alarmists changed global warming to climate change to cover their mistake. Then somebody slipped up and admitted that the last ice age had volatile weather, and that warm periods, like our present Holocene, had been more stable. But the people continued to be told that today’s climate was becoming more extreme, either too cold or too hot. The weather must be just right, they said. But the big bad climate alarmists … Continue reading A Global Warming Fairy Tale

Shocking Electricity Problems

‘Today is the age of wisdom, also the age of foolishness’ (paraphrased from Charles Dickens, “A Tale of Two Cities”). “It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life” (Bill Murray, Groundhog Day, 1993).  Today, we have achieved the highest level of human knowledge in history, but that high level has also created a certain intellectual ignorance due to the enormity of ‘knowing all there is to know’.   Specialization is occurring in narrowing fields of study, forcing society to rely on others for correct information.   Under this system, … Continue reading Shocking Electricity Problems

Misguided Missiles

We are fast becoming environmentally-minded misguided missiles, captivated by some green package, truck, or environmental business name.   In the name of the environment, we actually do many things that are destructive to it.   This, all for a molecule that has no statistical relationship with temperature.  With increased CO2, temperatures historically have gone down as well as up.    The alarmism over CO2 began in earnest in 1976, when the Pacific Ocean switched from its periodic cold cycle to a warm one.   In a 3 year period, Alaska’s average state temperature rose by 6 degrees, but you’re told that the Arctic … Continue reading Misguided Missiles

Stand Up and Be Counted

It’s ironic that the ETSU basketball team has chosen to kneel in protest of 400 years of white suppression, especially when all but two of the players come from outside East Tennessee and probably know little of its history.   So, if such protests are to be made, it seems quite proper to note some historical facts concerning why such a demonstration is ill-founded in this area.   Although Tennessee was considered a Confederate state, East Tennessee was decidedly 70% pro-Union, even supplying soldiers to the Union states, operating the Underground Railroad here to free slaves to the North, publishing … Continue reading Stand Up and Be Counted

Liberal Inconsistencies on Climate Change

Liberal misdirection concerning climate has developed into a major art form.   Natural warming is intentionally conflated with manmade.   In 2006 we had 10 years to solve the climate crisis, now it’s 9 more years, and in 2030 it will be 2040.   Meanwhile, the world’s oceans will return to their periodic cool state and prove them wrong.   Today, data involving sea level rise, runaway temperatures, climate theory, etc., have all been proven incorrect, but the unsuspecting public is unaware.  A recent letter argued incorrectly about record Arctic heat when it’s been warmer before, CO2 residence times of … Continue reading Liberal Inconsistencies on Climate Change

CRISIS, CRISIS, EVERYWHERE A CRISIS

“Any idiot can face a crisis, it’s the day to day living that wears you out” (Anton Chekhov). After a relatively good night’s sleep, you wake up knowing it’s going to be just another bad day.   Your bathroom scale just re-confirmed the existence of an obesity crisis. While chugging down your morning latte, the newspaper contains an extensive article about the coffee crisis.   Then the children are off to school, to contend with gender identification and test cheating crises. For both you and your wife, it’s off to work to endure yet another day of problems.             Later, dragging … Continue reading CRISIS, CRISIS, EVERYWHERE A CRISIS

WELL, IT’S ABOUT TIME

Genesis tells us that God’s first act, after creating our world, was to create night and day – or time.   St. Augustine observed that “The world was not made in time, but together with time”. In ancient times, the alternating of night and day controlled peoples’ lives, and those very dark hours were believed to contain demons and unwholesome vapors.   Plato noted how “evil spirits” were averse to the light. In those days, there was little sense of time’s passing.   But today, our precise measurements of time have made us virtual slaves to it.   Time controls … Continue reading WELL, IT’S ABOUT TIME

IS ORGANIZED RELIGION LOSING ITS WAY?

By Ron McCarley At the close of the first millennium after Christ, apocalyptic fears of the biblical end-times were heightened.   Famines, earthquakes, and astronomical events were seen as signs of the “Day of Wrath”. “Affliction overcame the hearts of many” (Godel), some reportedly dying “from fright, giving up their ghosts then and there” (Erdoes).   The rich disposed of their earthly treasures, and many people made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem.  Fast forward to 1988.   As the end of the second millennium approached, a new kind of millennial fever was emerging.   The biblical Armageddon was being replaced by an … Continue reading IS ORGANIZED RELIGION LOSING ITS WAY?

WHY ARE ETSU AND THE PRESS SO ONE-SIDED ON GLOBAL WARMING?

By Ron McCarley After 12 years of intense study of global warming and related subjects, the whole story of academia, media and private enterprises on the subject of global warming narrows to three basic contributing factors: money, liberal ideology, and power.   The general citizenry understands very little of science and, for this reason, it is easily duped, and duped daily. The science skills of U.S. science students are poor when compared to many other countries, such as Japan, Australia, Germany, Canada, the U.K., etc. Stephen Moore wrote: “My philosophy when I taught college was to show my students how … Continue reading WHY ARE ETSU AND THE PRESS SO ONE-SIDED ON GLOBAL WARMING?
