Down the Rabbit Hole

I recently came across an essay describing the articles of faith of the most recent incarnation of the radical left’s view of race.  What it boils down to is that white people are racist because they are white; that western culture is a system that perpetuates white male supremacy and actively, if often unconsciously, works to oppress people of color; and that this clearly immoral situation is both inescapable and uncorrectable. Wow!  Being white is literally, not figuratively, evil, and there is no way for those of us who are white (or at least self-identify as such) to escape our … Continue reading Down the Rabbit Hole

EVERYTHING IN THIS COLUMN IS FALSE

By Ron McCarley The information contained in this article is false.   Any confusion created by the author is purposeful, intended and entirely the fault of the reader.    Newspapers by 2030 will print special editions devoted solely to obituaries, the result of climate change. All those climate books, written by people with degrees in basket-weaving and the like, are unbiased and objective, while real climatologists should be ignored and vilified.  Wind turbines are reliable, never-failing, with useful lives as long as any conventional utility.   And ice throw, bearing failures, parasitic power consumption, numerous raptor kills, fires, pulsing sounds, shadow … Continue reading EVERYTHING IN THIS COLUMN IS FALSE

A Good Man and His Good Ideas

A recent bike ride on the Tweetsie Trail brought back a bittersweet memory.  In late August, 2014, my Scoutmaster, Tom Dosser, died.  I had seen him only 2 days earlier at the dedication of the Tweetsie Trail, and was surprised that he was in a wheelchair.  Two months earlier, he didn’t look like a man near death; more like the man who had tramped all over Buffalo Mountain for more than 20 years, blazing and building trails and creating a great city park. I met him when I was 12 years old and joined Boy Scout Troop 37 at Munsey … Continue reading A Good Man and His Good Ideas

The More Things Change….

One of the most remarkable changes in the last 150 years has been the increase in life expectancy.  Most evident in Japan and western Europe, it’s a world-wide trend.  Even in the poorest countries, life expectancy has jumped as modern medicine and medical technology spread. An equally important trend is decreasing birth rates.  This seems to be independent of culture; everywhere, economists and demographers tell us, as wealth increases, the birth rate falls.  In the richest nations, including the U.S., it has fallen below replacement.  The population of Japan is actually shrinking, and Europe is not far behind. These 2 … Continue reading The More Things Change….

Entitled brats need not apply…

By Rebecca Horvath The scenario was perfect: a sports team representing the United States would play for a world championship during the week of July 4. They even beat the British team in the semifinals. There was plenty of hype stateside and 1 billion people around the world watched the women’s World Cup final; we won. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the biggest part of the story. The Entitlement Disease spread around the women’s soccer team, infecting a number of players with a nasty attitude, a big mouth, a great disrespect for our country and perhaps even fever and chills. One star … Continue reading Entitled brats need not apply…

Wake Up, Baby!

Recently, in a very nice book store in the very nice and uber-Progressive town of Burlington,Vermont, I thought I had  found the stupidest kid’s books every published: Until my son topped them: From the Amazon website’s blurbs: “A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. ” “Woke Baby – For all the littlest progressives, waking up to seize a … Continue reading Wake Up, Baby!

ARE THE POLES REALLY WARMING?: THE MEDIA’S BIPOLAR DISORDER

By Ron McCarley “What gets us into trouble is …what we know for sure that just ain’t so.”  (Mark Twain)       The Assertion: Discover magazine, June 2017: “All we know so far is that…those [Antarctic] waters are getting warmer…, but the actual mechanisms are still uncertain”.      Fact: British Antarctic Survey, January 22, 2008, 9 years earlier: “First Evidence of Under-ice Volcanic Eruption in Antarctica”      Fact: Ohio State University via WUWT website, July 10, 2015:   “Study finds surprisingly high geothermal heating beneath West Antarctic Ice Sheet”      The Assertion: European Geosciences Union, February, 2014: “The researchers believe Jakobshavn Isbrae [Glacier] is in an unstable state, meaning it will … Continue reading ARE THE POLES REALLY WARMING?: THE MEDIA’S BIPOLAR DISORDER

The Reckoning

You start one thing, and it leads to another.  I got hooked on the TV series “Vikings”, and before you know it I’m reading a history of the Vikings.  Turns out the TV series (The History Channel and Amazon Prime), while taking plenty of the usual dramatic liberties, does a pretty good job of illustrating what we know about Norse culture in the Middle Ages – which isn’t much.   Most of the sparse history was written by their victims, who had more than enough reason to fear and hate them.  And it’s not that the Vikings engaged in fat shaming … Continue reading The Reckoning

Fake News is…real

By Rebecca Horvath “Fake news” has become part of our everyday lexicon, thanks in large part to President Donald Trump’s unique ability to succinctly summarize something we are all thinking but no one is saying. And as is often the case, if we push past Trump’s blustery delivery, he’s exactly right. The mainstream media is still in such hysterics over the 2016 election that they refuse to back down on their criticisms of the President, no matter how much he is accomplishing. The best economy in fifty years? But! But! But! Trump said mean words! Unemployment at a nearly fifty … Continue reading Fake News is…real

WHEN WILL THE POPULATION BUBBLE BURST?

By Ron McCarley The world has anguished over its present and future population problem, believing that humans have and will further exceed our planet’s “carrying capacity”.   In the past, we’ve been subjected to Malthusian population theories, the Club of Rome’s “Limits to Growth”, and Paul Ehrlich’s “Population Bomb”, all predicting rampant population increases coupled with insufficient resources.   Then the media of today perpetuates this hype with population projections that have little resemblance to reality.       It’s all designed to scare the public into accepting limits to its growth.   Many environmentalists consider a global population total of 1 to … Continue reading WHEN WILL THE POPULATION BUBBLE BURST?
